One of my favorite classes to teach is “Self-Protection for Women” and my favorite version of it is: “Women’s Self-Defense, Inside and Out” where we combine both protection tips and tools against an attacker as well as discussing ways we can protect ourselves against early death by preventable diseases.
Today I thought I would share a few of the self-protection tips against an attacker. First and foremost, I always stress the point that our moms were right: who you hang out with can get you in trouble. Over 80% of the time women know their attackers. So right there, if we just pay attention to who we are with, don’t put ourselves in compromising situations, and speak up for ourselves, we MAY be able to prevent ever needing to defend ourselves.
I say “MAY” because some of these bad guys that prey on women they know are very good at looking like good guys until they have their opportunity to show their true colors (plus there are those random attackers too).
The second main point I always share is that we need to do a better job of trusting our gut instincts. If you get a feeling in the pit of your stomach or a general sense of, “I shouldn’t be here” that would be a good time to change your circumstances. You don’t need to make a big deal out of it but neither do you need to allow someone to talk you into something you are uncomfortable with or shame you by saying, “I wouldn’t do anything, are you afraid of me?”
I once had an uncomfortable encounter with a man who had been riding his bike up and down the sidewalk in front of our martial arts school. This happened to be one of the two days a year that all of the classes were being held at a local park and I was the only one in the school. He came in and he had a wrench in his hand. I was behind the counter and he started asking a few questions. He was holding the wrench in one hand and kind of lightly hitting it in the palm of his other hand. I politely asked, “Would you please put the wrench away?” He replied, “I’m not going to do anything with it.” (In my head I am thinking…”I’ve seen CSI and I know how much damage a wrench can do.”) I said in a polite and slightly more firm tone of voice, “The wrench is making me nervous, please put it away.”
At that point he put the wrench in his back pocket, we finished our conversation with me being constantly aware of where he was, that I stayed behind the counter and I did a mental inventory of what was at my disposal to use as a weapon if I needed it. Thankfully, I didn’t need it and he left, never to be seen in our business again.
I think back to who I was several years ago and I don’t think I would have had the confidence to ask him to put the wrench away. And if I had asked him the first time, I am pretty sure I wouldn’t have asked again the second time. It isn’t about getting angry and spitting fire. It is about being kind and firm (there IS a time to spit fire but that is when you are 100% sure you need to defend yourself).
If all women could be trained to both trust their inner voices and speak up for themselves, we would all be happier and healthier; not only because we would need to defend ourselves less but also because we will have better relationships, both personally and professionally.

Filed under: Green Living, Uncategorized | Tags: cleaning with vinegar, green cleaners
Sometimes I will be at a green fair and ask people if they would like information on green cleaners and they say, “No thanks, I only clean with vinegar.” If they are close enough I may ask them a follow up question, “Do you only use vinegar on your dishes, laundry, and carpet too?” They will look at my as if to say, “Of course not.”
Don’t get me wrong…I am not against vinegar. I will often throw it into a load of laundry to help keep it fresh and I love using baking soda to get stains out of my tea mugs during dishes or to remove odors from the fridge. There is no ONE item that absolutely cleans everything, removes every stain, and conquers every mess. That is why so many people have a pile of cleaners under their kitchen sink, many of them toxic.
I am a HUGE fan of using natural cleaners and if people are happy with their vinegar, more power to them. Vinegar does have it’s limitations though. For one thing, it smells like vinegar. For another, it doesn’t actually LIFT the dirt from the surface you are cleaning, it simply changes the PH of the dirt. And, of course, as I mentioned above, it cannot be used for cleaning dishes (especially in a dishwasher) or for cleaning clothes without the addition of a laundry detergent.
If you are a vinegar user, I applaud you and appreciate how you support a healthy environment both for your family and for the planet.
If you would like to clean more naturally but think that:
- Green cleaners don’t work (you would be right a good portion of the time).
- Green cleaners are really expensive (you would also be right a good portion of the time here).
- Green cleaners do not always seem to be green (you would also be right here sometimes too).
A friend of mine once worked for a household cleaning company who switched to “green cleaners”. She started reading labels and discovered all kinds of warnings, plus the odors seemed similar to the old cleaners. She went to her supervisor and asked about it and he said, “They are green cleaners because they are super-concentrated and we are shipping less product and adding our own water.”
Sad as it may be, that is the case sometimes.
If you would like to try green cleaners but aren’t sure of where to start…go to: http://donnacopeland.myshaklee.com/us/en/category.php?main_cat=HomeCare and check out a “Get Clean Kit” it has everything you need to take care of your dishes, laundry, all-purpose cleaning, soap scum in the bathroom, and burned food in the kitchen (and kitty puke on the rug!). It is a tremendous value, significantly less expensive then you would pay for traditional cleaners like Windex and 409 plus you get two additional things:
- A money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied in any way.
- Me…you can call me and ask questions plus I will come to your home and help you open your box of products and show you how to use them properly (or your cleaning person).
Thank you for considering making a clean switch, creating a better world for yourself, your family, and the planet.

We just awarded two youth black belts at our martial arts school (Quest-MartialArts.com) in Ann Arbor and over the weekend we hosted a “Back To School” event that focused on how to have a successful school year. All of that has gotten me to thinking about what kind of self-defense our kids need.
Let’s face it, kids today are more likely to be injured in an accident or create lifetime health habits that down the road will cause an earlier-than-necessary death (like obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc.). That being said, I thought I would focus this post on preventing child abductions.
I’ll start with the same piece of advise I give in women’s self defense courses: “Who you know and who you hang around with has the biggest influence on whether you will ever need to be able to physically protect yourself.” The same is true for kids getting kidnapped. RANDOM child abductions have actually DECREASED in the last 30 years (although you wouldn’t think that by watching the news) while child abductions done by parents, grand parents or other relatives have increased in the same time frame.
We have a program we offer at Quest called “Steal-Proof Master” where the children learn about the ten different types of random abductors and how to tell if the are an “Evil Warrior”. Then they learn how to deal with each of the ten evil warriors and the primary point that is stressed over and over again is, “Don’t go with anyone unless you have your mom or dad’s permission.”
Knowing that accidents can happen to grown ups, I encourage all parents to have two or three trusted friends or family members that the child knows are always safe to go with if there has been an emergency. These people should also be listed as emergency contacts at school and at all the child’s extra-curricular activities.
Have a conversation with your kids today on why it is important that they never go with anyone without your permission, whether they know them or not. Share with your child who the trusted adults are that they can turn to if there is an emergency and they can’t reach you (and make sure you give your child those people’s phone numbers). And finally, make sure you talk to those trusted adults so they know that you are counting on them to help out in an emergency.
If you would like an electronic copy of the Ten Evil Warriors and how to deal with them, please contact Quest directly at www.Quest-MartialArts.com and be sure to give your e-mail address so it can be e-mailed to you.

I have been in California this past weekend, one of my quickest cross-country trips that I have ever had. We flew out Friday evening and were back in Michigan by 8 AM on Monday…Ugh! I knew that my immune system would be challenged between the weird hours of sleep, long hours in a seminar, and of course, my favorite, all that time in the airplanes. I packed my supplements and made sure that I brought along alfalfa.
I wasn’t a big fan of alfalfa when I first heard about it. It seemed kind of odd to consume grass (isn’t alfalfa in guinea pig food or given to horses?). In fact, the first person I remember singing the praises of alfalfa talked about how it helped them recover faster from hangovers. That isn’t a challenge that I have so I figured maybe I didn’t need alfalfa. Then I learned some interesting tidbits about alfalfa:
Did you know alfalfa is considered the “King of Plants”? That is because the roots grow very deep into the earth (up to 125 feet!) which creates an extremely nutrient-rich food.
Alfalfa is a natural anti-histamine (think allergies); anti-fungal (think athlete’s foot); anti-inflammatory (think heart disease or digestive issues); analgesic (pain relief); and diuretic (helps the body maintain it’s delicate water-balance). Did you know all of that?
In addition, alfalfa helps to support healthy kidney and bladder (makes urine less acidic); normalizes body chemistry (very alkalizing); cleanses body of toxins and aids in their removal from the body. It also helps to improve digestion and elimination because of the digestive enzymes present in the plant and its alkalizing property has antacid effect and also discourages the proliferation of both antigens (allergy producing) and pathogens (bacteria, virus, fungus) thereby alleviating allergies and many illnesses.
Is anyone else pretty impressed right now? That is why I took the alfalfa with me (and a couple extra doses). I knew my body was going to be under stress, I was going to maybe not be eating as well since I was traveling and might have more exposure to toxins. I was going to be sitting for long hours in a chair in a seminar (try for 12 hours each day) and in general want to feel good and recover quickly from my trip.
Who else would benefit from alfalfa? Anyone with any muscle or joint aches and pains or swelling, allergies or asthma, digestive issues, skin issues, someone with body or foot odor or bad breath, a person who is cleansing – helps with the detoxification process, provides trace minerals required to heal bones, injuries, and surgeries.
To take it, you start slow and build up to 1 tablet per 10 lbs of body weight divided doses with meals. It can be swallowed whole, chewed, or crushed and made into a tea.
Special thanks for the information obtained from “Why Do I Feel This Way?” Christine Gaber, RHN and Charlene Day, RDC

Filed under: Healthy Nutrition, Uncategorized | Tags: candida, candida symptoms, natural candida treatment, yeast overgrowth
Have you ever looked at a symptom list for candida (an overgrowth of yeast in the body)? I remember shortly after I was diagnosed with candida and I was getting some counseling on how we were going to battle those guys and I had just learned I had to cut ALL sugar out of my diet, including ALL fruits, for six weeks. I lamented, “But I LOVE sugar.” This lovely and patient woman pointed at my stomach and said, “THEY love sugar.”
Sugar cravings are at the top of the list for candida signs. They live on sugar and are quite cranky when they don’t get it. Since you are probably curious now, I’ll give you a short list of symptoms:
Brain/Nervous System
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Headaches
- Irritability
Immune/Respiratory
- Frequent infections (esp. ears/tonsils)
- Sinus congestion
- Environmental sensitivities
Reproductive
- Endometriosis
- Uterine Fibroids
- PMS
- Infertility
- Loss of libido
Digestive
- Colitis/Irritable Bowel
- Constipation
- Bloating/Gas
- Diarrhea
- Bad Breath
Other
- Acne/Skin disorders
- White coated tongue
- Athlete’s foot
- Canker sores
- Fatigue
See yourself in any of that?
The next question is always, “How does someone get it?” We are so used to only thinking of feminine “parts” for yeast infections. Candida overgrowth often comes after we disturb the natural balance of our bodies. There are two main causes:
- Introducing antibiotics, hormones (including birth control pills), or steroid-based medications (like cortisone) into our bodies
- Consuming diets too high in sugars and refined carbohydrates and/or too low in fresh fruits and veggies.
Now, how do we get rid of the bad guys and get our bodies back into balance?
You want to reduct yeast growth AND increase the good guys so you can do that by taking:
- Garlic (helps to reduce the numbers of the bad guys)
- Optiflora pre and pro biotic to reintroduce more of the good guys
I also took an oil of oregano for the first week or two but it made me nauseous and I begged my doctor to let me stop taking it a few days early. He agreed.
You want to increase your body’s immunity because it has taken a beating from the candida so take:
- Multi vitamin (high quality)
- Sustained release Vit C
- Nutriferon to stimulate the immune system
- CarotoMax to give you powerful antioxidants
You also want to reduce those sugar cravings and you can do that by taking:
- Glucose Regulation Complex
- B Complex
- Fiber
- Soy Protein
Reduce inflammation with OmegaGuard Omega 3’s
Balance hormones with GLA (Omega 6’s)
To assist your body in recovering its natural health and balance it is helpful to do a mild detoxification. As the yeast dies it releases toxins which can cause headaches, achiness, fatigue, and other overgrowth symptoms. To detoxify:
- Liver DTX
- Purified water
- Alfalfa
- HerbLax
Diet is extremely important both during the treatment of candida and on-going to ensure that you do not upset the balance again.
Foods to avoid:
- Sugar (including maple syrup, honey, molasses, and corn syrup)
- White flour products (white bread, crackers, snacks, etc)
Foods to include in your diet that nourish your body and cells:
- Protein-rich foods (fish, eggs, poultry, soy protein)
- Vegetables (dark salad greens, spinach, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, brussel sprouts, summer squash, cucumbers)
Our bodies are a great example of consequences. If we treat them well and take care of them they provide us with health and vitality. If we mistreat them and avoid giving them what they need we will end up with illness, on-going discomfort, and a feeling like our body is not fully taking care of us. Maybe think about the reverse of that…how well am I taking care of my body?

Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: immune boosting, immune support, supplements, toxins
The information I shared a week ago appeared to be very helpful to many of you, based on the number of hits the site had. I have additional ways to boost your immune system that I thought you might appreciate. It is a relief to hear that the health professionals have said that we likely don’t have much to worry about with Swine Flu but what hasn’t been emphasized is:
- Keeping our immune systems strong is our best defense against Swine Flu or any other disease, both from catching the virus in the first place and especially from death.
- There will be more illnesses coming around. We don’t know if they will come next week or next month or next year. Of course each year there is a new strain or two of the flu that makes it’s way around. What about the next “bug” that no one has seen before?
So some additional immune-boosting tips are:
- Have an Echinacea and zinc supplement “standing by” to boost your immune system when you have been exposed to illness or are starting to feel a little run down. Echinacea is not meant to be consumed every day of every year because our bodies will develop a tolerance. Instead use if for a couple weeks at a time to give yourself a quick boost then stop taking it again. Just keep it handy because when you feel like you need it, you don’t want to have to be running around trying to find it.
- Avoid sugar. I did a post last week on some of the dangers of sugar. What I didn’t discuss was that sugar is the “anti-nutrient” and it actually depletes your body of vitamins and minerals that are essential for your immune system (like B Vitamins, antioxidants, and zinc). A side note, based on the number of hits for THAT post, people don’t want to read about the dangers of sugar. So, I am going to take a lesson from the food industry and rather than outright address sugar, I am going to incorporate my anti-sugar message in places where you wouldn’t expect to find it. That is what the food industry has done.
In 1900 the average person ate 10 pounds of sugar a year. In 1985 that was up to 124 pounds per year. In the year 2000 we reached 160 pounds per year. When will it stop? How much sugar do YOU want to consume each year? How much sugar do you want your kids to consume each year? I’m not saying to never have sugar. I had rhubarb crisp as a Mother’s Day dessert with my mom and later I had a chocolate, peanut, and caramel candy last night, two actually. They were tasty! I’m suggesting that we be more thoughtful in our sugar intake and reduce BOTH how much we consume and how often we consume it.
- Reduce exposure to toxins. It is remarkable how many things we have been conditioned to think are actually a good thing are, in fact, dangerous to us. Everything from air fresheners to having a green and dandelion-free lawn increase our levels of toxic exposure. The air quality in our homes is 2 – 5 times worse than the outside air, according to the E.P.A.
Some of the top toxins our bodies are battling everyday (in my opinion):
- Household chemicals that touch our skin or that we inhale (cleaners, detergents, etc)
- Pesticide or herbicide foods (most farms that produce our foods use pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides to create “prettier” and more plentiful results then we consume that when we consume our food)
- Artificial, synthetic drugs that we take. You have probably heard that many of the drugs that are available actually were originally discovered in nature. And that is true. What isn’t stressed is that the researchers take the natural component, isolate it, and figure out how to make a synthetic version of it (for two main reasons: 1) They can better control the consistency of dosage with synthetics because natural components vary in their dosage based on water and nutrients in the soil. 2) They can put a patent on a synthetic compound and then sell it for higher profit. The downside is that there are side-effects for drugs. Look at the warning labels. How many of them warn against damage to your liver or all kinds of damages to your stomach or eyesight? For some of them the cure is worse than the disease.
There is a time and a place for drugs but my belief is that time should be few and far between. We need to keep our body’s strong and be less reactionary about our health. We, as Western humans, tend to expect that we can ignore advise about eating healthy and exercising and figure that the medical community can take care of our ailing bodies when that time comes.
There will be more “Immune-Boosting” tips to come! In the meantime, choose one or two things for yourself that you could see yourself doing that will boost your immunity.

Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: illness avoidance, immune support, immune system, immunity, interferon, prevention, resveratrol, supplements, Swine Flu, Vitamin D, vitamins
With all the concern today about Swine Flu and school closings I thought I would address ways we can keep our immunity strong, not just today with this current concern, but every day. I have information that ranges from common sense to cutting edge research. First off, do you do the basics that your mom taught you?
- Get plenty of sleep (7-8 hours each night). This is critical to keeping your immunity strong. Studies have also shown you are less likely to have a heart attack and more likely to lose weight if you are getting adequate rest. This is the time your body needs to slow down and regenerate.
- Drink plenty of water (2-3 liters per day). Your body is made up of water so it makes sense that you need to add more good, pure water in to keep it healthy. If your body is fighting being exposed to something you want to give it support by helping to flush out any toxins. Filtered water is best because truly your body doesn’t need the bleach they put in municipal water systems. (Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake too.)
- Eat good food and maintain a balanced diet. Get your fruits and veggies; avoid sugars and high-fat diets (although feel free to be liberal with “cold pressed” fats like many olive oils as long as you are eating them cold, not using them to fry chicken!). See some of my other posts for more information on good nutrition.
You know there is more but you aren’t looking to read “War and Peace” today. Okay! Now onto some of the things your mom may not have told you about. She likely didn’t know this information to share it with you. She may have encouraged you to take a daily vitamin and that is a good start (as long as the supplement actually breaks down in your body and gets absorbed and isn’t tainted with lead like so many are today). You want to choose supplements that are based on food, not synthetics. If the pill is rather small but covers most of the RDA suggestions for a day, it is likely synthetic and packed so tight there is no way your body is going to break it down to take advantage of the nutrients. Plus, our bodies recognize synthetics differently than “real” food. Don’t waste your time or money taking a vitamin your body doesn’t want. Here are some specific “immune system support” supplements:
- B Vitamins: All of them, but especially B6, Folic Acid, and B12. When our bodies are stressed they really go through the B Vitamins so if you have been under extra pressure, get additional B Vitamins in your diet.
- Vitamin A: Also known as beta carotene.
- Vitamin C: Probably one of the most well-known immune boosters; Very helpful for cell regeneration and healing.
- Vitamin E: Not just for healthy skin, it is good for you inside and out.
- Zinc: You may have become aware of the studies showing that zinc helps lessen a virus’ severity and length; taken as a precaution it also aids with prevention.
- Echinacea: This is for short-term use only when you think you may have been exposed to illness. I helps to “supercharge” your immune system but overtime your body adjusts to its use and the affect lessens. Use for only two to four weeks at a time.
- Resveratrol: This miracle supplement that has been featured by Barbara Walters and separately on 60 Minutes has been shown to increase our body’s immunity at a cellular level, where the battle is being waged.
One last tidbit your mom didn’t know about. Your body’s immune system is greatly supported by interferon. Interferon was discovered during the 1950’s in Japan and since then researchers have discovered how to create a drug form that is used commonly for cancer and AIDS patients. From what I understand the side effects are pretty challenging. However, the same immunologist who discovered interferon also created a supplement that helps our body’s boost our natural production of interferon for immune support. I think this is partly responsible for why I didn’t get ill after my dad died last year. Even with all the stress and the lost sleep, I was able to stay healthy and I credit a lot of that to my supplements.
You can learn more about immune support and interferon at the website www.ImmunityFacts.com. If you are interested in getting some good, clinically proven (and money-back guaranteed) supplements to boost your immunity, get in touch with me. I am not into scare tactics but I think there is a lot more we can be doing for our bodies on a regular basis that the media doesn’t tell us about. They would rather scare us and then hope there is a large enough stockpile of drugs to treat everyone. Personally, I am looking to avoid Swine Flu and other illness in the first place. Want to join me?

Filed under: Healthy Nutrition, supplements | Tags: cancer prevention, lead in vitamins, mental health, neurological health, Omega 3's, prevention, supplement concerns, supplements, toxins, Vitamin D, vitamins
There has been some bad press about supplementation. One of the challenges is that many of the studies done are isolating one nutrient and only looking at that. Our bodies are complex and food is complex also. Nutrients work in conjunction with each other. In addition, I wonder at the quality of the vitamins they are studying. Are synthetic vitamins received in the body the same as vitamins that come from food sources? I don’t think so and many of the responses I have been reading agree.
You are talking to a “supplement convert.” I recall sitting in my ob-gyn’s office when I was in my mid-20s and she asked me if I was taking a multivitamin or calcium. I said no to both that I didn’t like swallowing pills. She STRONGLY but kindly encouraged me to reconsider because folic acid is one of the leading things women can do to prevent birth defects. I wasn’t looking to get pregnant at that time but you never know what happens. I actually started out taking chewable children’s vitamins that have the adult dosage of folic acid.
Years passed and I started learning more about my body, proper nutrition, and the differences between supplements (how they are manufactured, types of vitamins/minerals, how my body will absorb the nutrients, etc). So I am sharing with you some of the latest news I gathered by Dr. Jamie McManus, Chairman of Shaklee Corporation’s Medical Affairs. She spoke in Michigan recently and this is what we are learning about two common supplements Omega 3’s and Vitamin D.
Omega 3’s have been known for years to provide for heart health and protection against heart disease. There is new information coming out that also shows support of:
- Macular degeneration
- Depression/stress reduction
- Menopause
- Neuro-protection (support brain health) (especially great for for pregnant woman to take)
- Kidney disease
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
Here is my primary concern about Omega 3’s…these fish oil supplements can be full of heavy metals, just like the fish are. So if we are going to recommend a supplement for pregnant woman it better not be loaded with mercury, dioxin, or any other dangerous contaminants. Need some guidance? Don’t just go to the drugstore and buy what is cheapest. Go with a company known for quality and thorough testing of EACH BATCH!
My secondary concern of Omega 3’s is how they are being combined in a “one a day” tablet along with all the other nutrients we are supposed to get in a day. Some of our nutrients absorb in different places throughout out digestive tracts. So first of all, those little pills are packed so tight your body can’t break them down to access the nutrition. Plus, you can’t get complex, whole food nutrition in a little pill. Those supplements are almost always synthetic which I believe our bodies are smart enough to know the difference and treat synthetics differntly.
Moving on to: Vitamin D, it’s not just for bones anymore.
60 to 80% of the population is deficient in Vitamin D. WOW!!! I was deficient up until my doctor ran a blood test and determined that I was low in Vitamin D. I didn’t realize it by how I felt, I didn’t connect it with any symptoms I was having. This should show the concern that we are obviously NOT getting our nutrients from our food sources. Also, living in a northern climate, studies have shown that we do NOT get our Vitamin D from the sun during the winter months. I don’t know why that is but I have read that from several sources. What is Vitamin D good for? Prevention of:
- Colon cancer
- Bone fracture
- Dental problems
- Cholesterol problems
- Multiple Sclerosis
Were there a couple surprises on the list? There were for me.
So as a “supplement convert” I rarely miss a day anymore. I can now swallow pills (although I do it one at a time!) and I consider my supplements as important to take as if I was on a prescrption (which I’m not on). I think in the long run I will be able to avoid prescriptions by taking care of my body from the inside out. Check out www.LandmarkStudy.com for more information about long-term supplement users having better health.

Sorry about my long, long, long absence from my blog. It is funny that I was doing pretty good when I made a commitment to write three or four times per week. THEN (in a fit of enthusiasm) I made a commitment to myself to write once per day and I haven’t submitted a single word since then. What is that about?
So I am getting over myself and getting back in the game. I have been speaking with some friends that are trying to get a handle on their weight and fitness and it occurs to me that any major goal we are attempting to achieve is about staying in the game.
So I benched myself for a while and now I am back. My apologies for staying out of the game so long.
I really believe “how you do anything is how you do everything” and that gives me food for thought. Where else in my life do I shy away when I step up my commitment level? When else have I dropped the ball just when things were getting serious?
Do you see any of yourself in here?
Where have you been disappointed in yourself recently and how does that reflect in other areas?
So for today I am going to leave my message here. I will write again very soon.
